One of my fondest memories from childhood is tucking into piping hot claypot rice for dinner after a long wait at the hawker center. He Ping Claypot Rice is a family-run restaurant that’s been in the business for over 40 years. Located along Sims Avenue, within a 10 minutes’ walk from Ajunied MRT Station, this open-air establishment serves up traditional family fare at affordable prices. 

Its signature Claypot Chicken Rice ($10 for small, $20 for medium, $30 for large) is prepared traditionally with charcoal, so call ahead if you want to avoid the 30-minute wait. 

Diners can enjoy extra “tableside service” in the form of staff mixing in the dark sauce and oil when ready. The chicken, Chinese sausage, salted fish, and salted duck egg yolk are all removed before this process, allowing you to enjoy the ingredients’ original flavour along with the well-flavoured rice.

I felt this was a nice touch, as most stalls leave customers to mix the ingredients themselves. Taste-wise, the chicken stood out the most with its tenderness.

Other than that, fill up on other family-style side dishes ranging from meat and seafood-based dishes to soups. The Deep Fried Seafood Beancurd ($8 – $12) is highly recommended for its homely flavours and generous portions. A tad on the dry side, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I found the Sambal Kangkong ($10) to be on the bland side, so you might want to increase the spice level for your order.

The highlight turned out to be the Fried Pork ($15). Like the chicken, the pork slices are tender and flavourful.

What’s a claypot rice dinner without some nourishing soup to wash it all down? The Lotus and Peanut Soup ($5) is one reasonably-priced broth. I loved how clear-tasting and comforting it was to sip on after after a relatively indulgent meal.
