While majority of the stalls are located in the CBD area and some polytechnics and universities, the others are scattered around various heartland hawker centres in Singapore. And so, my hawker trail took me to Alexandra Village Food Centre.

Haikee Soy Sauce Chicken Rice @ Changi Road – The Secret’s in the Sauce (Invite)

“A chicken rice stall on Instagram? Must be run by youngsters,” my friend quipped when I first mentioned Hai Kee Soy Sauce Chicken Rice to him.

Indeed, Singapore has seen a surge of millennial hawknerpreneurs stepping up to preserve our local hawker culture, whether by putting their own spin on traditional fare or simply sticking to the classics – as is the case for the brother and sister team running this hugely popular stall at Kim San Leng Coffeeshop on Changi Road.

Update 19 Jan 2025: PORTA has closed.

It’s that time of the year when we gather round the table with our loved ones, to recall a year well spent over good food and company.

PORTA Fine Food & Company – home of the Singapore River Signature Prawn and Chorizo Pasta – invites festive diners to indulge in their Festive Menu come mid December (details at the bottom of this post!).

For starters, titillate your taste buds with a Charcuterie Platter ($30++) – a homely combination of homemade duck rillette, foie gras terrine, chorizo, Bayonne Ham and saucisson.

4 Things Worth Celebrating about #TheSingleLife on 11.11 Singles Day (And Black Friday!)

Now normally I would save a post like this for when Valentines’ Day is just around the corner. But since 11.11 Singles Day is coming up, what better time to for all you single guys and gals to remind yourselves that the #independent life is not as dreary as your coupled friends and concerned relatives make it out to be?
Just in case you’ve forgotten, here are 5 ways to celebrate your independence.

1 Your Vacation = Your Agenda

Unless you are travelling with friends or family, vacation time is me time! What better way to escape the drudgery of small talk and daily obligations than to treat yourself? Want to sleep past twelve? Sure! Toying with the thought of getting up and setting out for unexplored terrain? Why not?
For me, travelling solo is a time to recharge and reflect on my life goals…and ticking off those remaining boxes on my bucket list. Sometimes, some things (or places) are best experienced on your own too.

2 Focus on Your Personal Growth

Speaking of bucket lists, the time when you’re single is the best for pushing your own boundaries and making those bold life choices you’ve been putting off.

3 Feast Guilt-Free to Your Heart’s Content

Waiting till your Instagram savvy boyfriend has taken the perfect #flatlay of his food. Warily negotiating your girlfriend’s strict calorie count at dinner. None of these… inconveniences exist when you’re at a meal for one. Best of all, no fighting over that last morsel of food!

And last but not least…

4 Shop Till You Drop – Without Having to Face the Music!

Did you know that 11.11 Singles Day is also known as Black Friday, the biggest retail day of the year? With clothing lines like Zalora, H&M, Uniqlo and more launching their own sales, it’s the equivalent of Christmas for shopaholics.

But why wait? ShopBack has prepared for you a list of 11.11 Singles Day and Black Friday Deals for you to check out ahead of 11 November! So here’s me sharing it with you!

The Glasshouse @ CHIJMES – Specialty Coffee and Toast Bar in a Glass Container

Visitors to the historic CHIJMES would have noticed a new addition in the vicinity – a compact glass container tucked away from the array of restaurants and bars.

The Glasshouse – not to be confused with the Fish and Co. outlet which closed last year – prides itself on serving specialty coffee and artisanal sourdough toasts. With light spilling in every corner, and the therapeutic aroma of coffee wafting through every now and then as a new cuppa was being brewed, it’s not hard to see why this cafe is on its way to becoming one of the must visit spots in town.

Each time I travel to Japan, I make it a point to check off a few more items off my foodie list, as well as bring back my favourite snacks to last me till my next trip.
