[CLOSED] Myeongdong District @ Fortune Centre, Middle Road – Authentic Korean Street Food That Doesn’t Burn A Hole In Your Wallet

Update 19 Jan 2025: Myeongdong District has closed. 

The K-wave is showing no signs of slowing down, with various Korean-themed eateries and Korean-inspired cafes popping up as of late. If you’re craving an authentic Korean street food experience, Myeongdong District – not to be confused with the iconic shopping and fashion belt – recently set up shop in Fortune Centre.

Like its neighbours, Myeongdong District sports a barebones interior with cozy tables set amidst a bright orange backdrop. A K-pop track playing in the background would definitely add to the “Korean street food stall” atmosphere. The eatery cum takeaway kiosk is operated by a pair of young gentlemen who prepare every dish to order.

Update 19 Jan 2025: Menbaka Fire Ramen has moved to The Centrepoint.

If you’ve always been curious about Kyoto’s iconic Menbaka Fire Ramen but never got to try it (for obvious reasons), they have opened their first and only international outlet in Cineleisure Orchard.

While I’m personally skeptical about how well overseas food concepts, particularly Japanese, translate to local palates, curiosity got the better of me when I saw it was relatively empty one late weekend afternoon. 

So, how does Singapore’s take on Menbaka Fire Ramen compare to the OG outlet in Kyoto?

Update August 2023: Soba Kappo Reiwa has moved to Kiliney Road. 

Following a successful start in Singapore’s heartlands, Japanese-run Reiwa Soba has upgraded to a space of its own, named Soba Kappo Reiwa. Interestingly, the hole-in-the-wall eatery can be found a 2-min walk away from Buddha Tooth and Relic Museum, in the heart of Chinatown.

Chunky Lobsters has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a takeaway kiosk in the CBD, now serving up delicious rolls and seafood dishes at its current home in orchardgateway. Regulars at its previous iterations may also notice that its newest dine-in concept now rocks a fully nautical decor inspired by the rustic lobster shacks of New England.

Isshin Machi may sound like a Japanese eatery, but don’t be fooled – it’s a Taiwanese eatery through and through, complete with authentic Taiwanese street food and popular Mandopop beats playing at its premises. 

With its third outlet opening at GR.ID (formerly known as PoMo), students from the neighbouring SMU and SOTA campuses can now dine on its authentic, affordable Taiwanese fare!
