Chunky Lobsters @ orchardgateway, Somerset – Affordable Lobster Rolls with a New Dine-In Concept (Media)

Chunky Lobsters has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a takeaway kiosk in the CBD, now serving up delicious rolls and seafood dishes at its current home in orchardgateway. Regulars at its previous iterations may also notice that its newest dine-in concept now rocks a fully nautical decor inspired by the rustic lobster shacks of New England.

True to its branding as Singapore’s very own affordable seafood shack, Chunky Lobsters offers delectable lobster rolls that are generously stuffed with mouthwatering toppings.

The New Original Roll ($32) is an upgraded take on the rolls that caught diners’ attention when it first launched some four years back. With a buttered roll fully loaded with plump Canadian lobster claw meat, as well as shredded lobster meat layered below it, portions are enough for two smaller eaters. I like how Chunky Lobsters’ lobster rolls lack the distinct brininess of most lobster dishes, allowing the rich and tangy notes from the creamy tarragon sauce and mayo to elevate the slightly sweet claw meat.

Other more wallet-friendly options include Liquid Gold with cheddar melt ($24) and the locally-inspired Red Monster Roll with Sichuan mala sauce ($24).

A dine-in concept also means it’s now possible to expand the menu beyond grab-and-go dishes. The Lobster Truffle Capellini ($25) is a scrumptious main item complete with truffle shoyusakura ebi, and ikura that add a Japanese touch. Compared to the richer tasting New Original Roll, I found this to be a lot more subtle, almost lacking the decadent factor.

Complement your lobster feast with your pick of seafood-based dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The Garlic Miso Mussels ($11) are a crowd favourite with its succulent blue mussels doused with homely white miso, butter, and kombu. While the Truffle Parmesan Fries ($4) are perfect for snacking on while waiting for your main course to arrive.
