Wakey Wakey @ The Concourse – Waffles So Fragrant, You Can Smell Them From A Mile Away; Rice Bowls Out Now

Remember a time when waffles dominated Singapore’s cafe scene and our Instagram feeds? The once trending food fad may have cooled a little over the years, but that hasn’t stopped newcomers like Wakey Wakey from giving them a go.

Located a stone’s throw away from bustling Kampong Glam, Wakey Wakey is an industrial themed cafe, with cozy tables and rugs strewn about its otherwise grey floors. While the pace does seem slow at first, the crowds build up around late afternoon on the weekends. WiFi is not available, but The Concourse’s public network provides some good connection to the Internet if you are here to work or surf the web.

Coffee is decent, and I appreciated the full bodied flavour of the Flat White ($5+). The Matcha Latte($6+) is another comforting concoction that’s ideal for warming you up on chilly day, though on the sweet side (I prefer my matcha lattes less sweet).

Wakey Wakey is run by the same team behind Stranger’s Reunion and Curious Palette, so don’t be surprised if you see any of their classic favourites showing up on the menu…. like the Buttermilk Waffles with Fresh Fruits ($12+ with maple syrup, $13 with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream)! So fresh, I could literally catch the fragrant scent of freshly sliced bananas wafting towards me before the dish even arrived at my table.

When I cut into the waffles – OH MY. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Paired with the ice cream and fruits, and every bite made a perfect piece of heaven on my tastebuds.

While Wakey Wakey is still building its full menu, the Spread & Dips are worth checking out if you are craving something savoury in between all those waffles and cakes. Anchovy ($7.90+) is a briny dish of anchovy emulsion, salted anchovies, roasted garlic pulp, fresh cherry tomatoes, and dill oil, that pairs really well with sourdough toast (you can also opt for brioche or multigrain bread).

It’s quite a filling side, so I’d recommend to share this with a friend or you’ll be reaching for a glass of water more than a few times. Add $2.50 for a pair of Sous Vide Eggs for some added taste and smoothness!

With is warm ambience and friendly staff, Wakey Wakey is definitely one of those cafes I would love to wake up to on a lazy weekend morning. Can’t wait to check out their mains when their menu is fully up and running!
