Hei Kim Cafe @ Changi Road – $7-10 Eggs and Pasta in the East Feat. xHundredfold Shop & Studio

In a time where 8 out of 10 cafes charge an exorbitant $20++ for a mediocre eggs on toast, Hei Kim Cafe‘s crazy affordable prices for a simple eggs or pasta dish is incredibly refreshing. Located along the cozy stretch of Changi Road, this lifestyle cafe, which also houses xHundredfold‘s shop and studio, is a pretty new addition to the cafe scene in the east.

A warm, homely atmosphere greets you as you step into the cafe. While it was pretty quiet around Sunday afternoon, the cozy space soon grew boisterous as it filled with customers – and students for a weaving workshop in the shop cum studio area.

Hei Kim’s menu is simple and affordable, with an equal spread of savoury and sweet mains. Prices for mains don’t go beyond $15, and you can add other brunch essentials like avocado, bacon, mushroom, and sausage for $2-4.

I decided to be a little more adventurous, and opted for their latest addition, the Furikdao & Ramen Egg Toast ($12), an Asian take on the traditional scrambled eggs and toast.

While it sounded promising on the menu, I felt Hei Kim’s creation could have fared much better had the smashed avocado gotten more seasoning. The seaweed added an interesting texture, but I preferred if it was toasted for crunch. No complaints on the ramen egg, though – I’m actually surprised a Western cafe managed to pull them off so well.

It would be interesting to see Hei Kim go all in with a brunch menu with an Asian twist, to stand out from the sea of third wave coffee joints!

The Rose Latte ($4) is a secret item on the drinks menu. Pro tip: request for less sugar in your latte, to enjoy the tantalising rose notes.

Hei Kim has no shortage of desserts to satisfy the sweet tooth. The Chilli Chocolate Tart ($4) is a must try for those seeking an extra kick of spice, which cuts through the richness of the chocolate.

Overall, Hei Kim is a pretty neat cafe; the food prices alone are enough to win me over. And with WiFi available, I would definitely head back if I’m need of a quiet space to catch up on work over the weekend!
