There’s nothing not to love about steamboats – simple, nutritious ingredients thrown together to cook in a flavourful broth of your choice, often in the company of family and friends.
Mention the word “steamboat” to any food-loving Singaporean, and the first brands that inevitably come to mind are the likes of Haidilao and Beauty In A Pot. But in my opinion, M Hotel’s Seafood Steamboat Buffet Dinner is well on its way to becoming another worthy contender for the title of steamboat of choice in the CBD.
Overlooking the streets of Tanjong Pagar, M Hotel’s The Buffet boasts a gorgeous array of fresh steamboat ingredients with an intimate setting. Plush red seats and black marble tabletops give the place a modern vibe that welcomes diners of all ages.
M Hotel’s formula to a hearty, satisfying steamboat lies in its emphasis on simple, yet fresh and delicious ingredients that will leave you coming back for seconds; good thing there are unlimited servings for the taking.
Seafood is definitely the highlight of M Hotel’s Steamboat Buffet, which fresh scallops, salmon, mussels, and even prawns done two ways displayed at the forefront of their selections. My personal recommendations are the plump Sri Lankan mud crabs and whole promphet, which are undeniably fresh and succulent!
Of course, not forgetting there is also a variety of sauces for you to mix and match, as well as fresh cuts of meat, vegetables, and tofu to complement your seafood.
Soup bases are MSG-free, and diners may dip their pickings in a complimentary Superior Chicken Broth, or top up $5 – $12 for a choice of Spicy Thai Thom Yum, Eight Treasure Soup, or Double-Boiled Imperial Collagen Broth from Japan.
Aside from free-flow seafood, meats, vegetables, and noodles, among others, M Hotel’s Seafood Buffet also boasts a couple of live stations that are worth checking out while waiting for your soup to boil.
First is the Live Prawn Station, which features prawns that are caught live from a tank that is fixed right into the station, before being cooked in a rich and creamy pot of collagen broth for maximum freshness and flavour.
Each prawn is delightfully plump and succulent, boasting meat that falls easily of the shell, and yields a sweet aftertaste! So nutritious and mouthwatering, I had a couple more bowls after this, and why not? Who can say no to freshly caught and cooked seafood in air conditioned comfort?
Aucusa, the hotel’s resident robot chef, may look a tad out of place at a steamboat buffet, but I’m not complaining. This chef-on-wheels has become a rather popular fixture at M Hotel’s breakfast buffets, with its automated way of flipping one customised omelette after another for eagle-eyed guests.
Nothing ends a meal quite perfectly like dessert. And here at M Hotel, nothing stands out more than their Durian Puree, which is mixed from a secret blend of fresh durians and scooped into individual cups.
All in all, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time at M Hotel’s Seafood Buffet. Considering the freshness of the ingredients and the hotel’s central, yet not overly busy location, it’s well worth the price, and a great place to bring your family together for a seafood feast!
