Gaku Sushi Bar @ Downtown East – All In One Japanese Food (Media)

GAKU Sushi Bar opened its doors at Downtown East about a month ago, just in time for the rush of families heading out for the school holidays. Operated by Suki Group, this new addition to Singapore’s Japanese food scene has made its home in the “new” wing of Downtown East.

GAKU Sushi Bar’s menu is pretty extensive, boasting an almost “all in one” approach to Japanese cuisine. From sashimi  to cooked food, you’ll not find yourself wanting. For starters, the Kanpachi Cerviche ($16) provides a spicy, tangy kick that takes your tastebuds for surprise. And the Sashimi Platter ($38 for 3 kinds, $68 for 6 kinds) sets you up with your choice of toothsome cuts of sashimi

Of course, the eponymous sushi is aplenty at GAKU Sushi Bar. The Sushi Platter ($35 for 6 pcs, $43 for 10 pcs) offers you a sampler of delicious sushi that GAKU has to offer, such as crowd pleasers like unagimentaiko egg, and prawn. It was certainly challenging for us to pick which piece of sushi to try, as they all looked equally inviting!

The Spicy King Salmon Maki ($5.50) offers you value for money, with a medley of ingredients packed in a compact maki that is pleasing on both the eyes and palate.

Sushi and sashimi not up your alley? GAKU Sushi Bar’s hot food menu boasts a variety of side and main dishes that will whet your appetite. Bite into some Gaku Fried Chicken ($16), whose tender meat is complimented by the crisp skin that is layered over it. Best enjoyed piping hot!

The Beef Chahan ($25) is one for the truly ravenous, as it is a very hearty serving of Japanese fried rice topped with beef and… possibly a week’s supply of tobiko. Dig in and enjoy an explosion of flavours and crunch!

For “something from the sea”, you can’t go wrong with Angel Hair Truffle Pasta with Hokkiado Scallop ($25), which is proving to be one of GAKU Sushi Bar’s popular dishes.

GAKU Sushi Bar is great for families and groups that are craving Japanese food, but can’t seem to settle on “which type of Japanese food”. Diners can get in on the action at the counter, where GAKU’s chefs work tirelessly to create mouthwatering sushi and sashimi platters. Otherwise, couples and small groups can opt for more intimate setups and even a private room for five.
