Say hello – or rather, hellu to a new cafe in town! Located diagonally across Korio, Hellu Coffee is the latest addition to Far East Square‘s collection of hipster cafes and coffee joints.
Following a successful soft launch in January, Hellu Coffee is already attracting crowds that far exceed its sixteen-seater, hole-in-the-wall space. At 2.30pm on a Saturday, the crowds were going strong, with customers spilling over to the neighbouring tables. It started to thin closer to late afternoon.
Decor-wise, Hellu Coffee rocks some minimalist-meets-Gen-Z aesthetics. Best of all, you can dine in comfort even in the alfresco area, which is air-conditioned. Good news with the return of the warm weather!
The hype for Hellu Coffee’s signature “creamu” drinks and croffles is well-deserved.
Think of the “creamu” series as a beverage and dessert mixed into one. For the Matcha Creamu ($7.50 for hot, $8.90 for iced), I was instructed to enjoy the frothy, sweet cream before starting on the beverage component. Mixing it into the drink would render it far too sweet. The contrast between the saccharine sweet cloud of cream and the notably bitter matcha is uniquely refreshing, though the matcha is a tad too milky for my liking.

Coffee aficionados can check out the Dirty Creamu ($9.50 for iced) which pairs matcha with espresso.
The croffles are another huge hit, selling out early in the afternoon. The Plain Croffle ($5.50) is especially crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. There’s also a distinct sweetness that makes it far more addictive than it should be. Stay away if you’re on a diet because you can’t stop at one!

CBD dwellers in need of a pick-me-up on WFO days have a new place to treat themselves. It’s a blessing in disguise that I don’t work in the Telok Ayer area anymore, as I would personally find it hard to stay away from Hellu Coffee’s sweet treats!
