Obestrasse is an unassuming cafe set in rustic Lavender, named after the neighbourhood that its owner stayed at while studying in St Gallen Switzerland. Here, cafegoers can enjoy simple brunch fare while enjoying its chill vibes.
Food-wise, Obestrasse’s offerings are not distinctly different from other cafes. Instead, it focuses on quality cooking and ingredients. While it’s known for its rosti, the Oven-Baked Cajun Chicken Thigh ($19) is also pretty popular among customers, judging by Google reviews.
As chicken thighs go, it’s perfectly seasoned, with plenty of robust flavours in every bite. From the crisp, smokey skin to the juicy, succulent meat. And the tater tots are well-fried and equally crisp. The only complaint I have about this dish is it’s a tad oily; the brocoli could also do with a touch less seasoning to contrast with the meat. Overall, it’s pretty substantial for a main dish and it will keep you full and satisfied.

For dessert, Obestraase also has a variety of baked goods displayed at its counter. The Oreo Brownie, unfortunately, did not live up to expectations and it got a little dry and cloying toward the end. Perhaps the other cakes would have fared better.

Obastrasse is a decent place to unwind if you’re looking for your cafe fix away from its busier neighbours. I would like to give the rosti a go the next time I’m there!
