Since its debut in 2018, homegrown cafe Merci Marcel has added two more outposts to its belt. The newest one at Palais Renaissance in Orchard Road fast establishing itself as a chic oasis with a French-Balinese vibe in the heart of town.
Now in its third year running, the F&B brand continues to draw crowds, with the Palais Renaissance branch remaining at full capacity well into the afternoon. Since my last visit to the OG branch at Tiong Bahru left me with good memories, expectations were pretty high when we visited to try the newer items that had been launched since then.
The Tarte Flambée ($26++) is a crowd pleaser, with thin-crust pizza topped with reblochon cheese, grapes, and smoked duck breast. The sweetness of the grapes helps to lift the rich and savoury flavours of the cheese and duck breast, and the pizza manages to remain cruncy even after an extended time. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of Timbre’s smoked duck pizza!
The Barramundi Tartare ($24++) is another noteworthy item that can either be enjoyed by one, or shared as a side. The fresh, raw barramundi pairs very well with the avocado and pickled red onion. Overall, an artfully plated dish with subtle flavours that need just a pinch of lime juice to elevate it.
Merci Marcel continues to set itself up as the premium spot to be for brunch, if you’re looking for a place to rest your feet while still being within walking distance of the hustle and bustle in Orchard Road. Choose from the sunlit alfresco areas fitted with bright walls and lush greenery, or hunker down in a cozy, indoor spot complete with comfortable cushions and intimate lighting!
