Move over, sandwiches. Japan’s latest food trend, the sushi sandwich, has landed in Singapore in the form of #ricesando tokyo.
Located at Plaza Singapura, #ricesando tokyo is a joint venture between the founders of Tendon Kohaku, Menya Kokoro, and Snackz It! and Ah Mah Homemade Cakes.
There are seven flavours ranging from mushroom to seafood, and you can add toppings like melted cheese and sunny side up egg to enhance your rice “sandwich”. The Unagi ($7.80) is flavourful and melts in your mouth. Pro tip: melted cheese pairs perfectly well with the unagi‘s sweetness!

As for meat-based options, you can’t go wrong with the Gyu Sukiyaki ($6.20), another melt-in-your-mouth flavour that features tender, comforting, sukiyaki slices. The Sunny Hamburg ($6.80) is equally noteworthy. I was surprised at how quickly these sandos filled me up.

With prices ranging from $4.60 – $8.20, the rice sandos are pretty worth bang for your buck, considering the amount of quality ingredients used. What stands out for me is the yumepirika, premium rice from Hokkaido, whose chewiness enhances the mouthfeel of the sando!
Peckish diners can go for a Value Set ($9.40 – $13), which includes a side and drink of your choice. The Original Karaage ($3.80) is pretty decent, though the portions could be a little more generous for the price.

#ricesando tokyo is worth checking out if you’re craving something unique, whether as a snack or a full meal. What do you think will be Singapore’s next big food trend?
