I love cafes that step outside their comfort zone and try new things in the kitchen. Apollo Coffee Bar has become one of my favourite places to cafe hop for their ever-changing menu of classic and Asian-inspired foods. 

Tucked away in Serangoon Garden Way, Apollo Cafe is consistently crowded no matter which day of the week, not least because it’s run by the same team behind Atlas Coffeehouse and Columbus Coffee Co, both equally popular cafes. 

The cafe is gorgeously decorated, with seating available indoors and al fresco. Food-wise, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choices, with a brunch menu that’s available till 4pm and lunch-only items from 12pm onwards. 

While you can find Western classics such as burgers and pancakes, I highly recommend you giving their Asian-inspired items a try as they’re well-thought-out and executed.

The Unagi Bennett Eggs ($21.40++) comes across as a dish that someone would slap together in search of a hangover breakfast. This unique pairing silky scrambled eggs and chunky unagi somehow works, with its savoury and sweet elements coming together perfectly. I also love that the unagi has not a single bone in it, and you can mop up the teriyaki sauce with the crisp focaccia pieces.

Biang biang noodles are a more common appearance at Chinese eateries, so it was nice to try Apollo Coffee Bar’s take on this homemade staple. The Chilli Chicken Biang Biang Noodles ($22.90++) is one for the ravenous, with succulent, scallion-fried chicken chunks and sunny side egg drizzled with spicy aji verde. The noodles themselves are hearty and al dente, like a zhnged up bowl of meepok.

Diners who find themselves still leaning toward the classics can check out noteworthy items such as Mushroom Bacon Carbonara and Chorizo, Eggs and Avo, as well as homemade cakes and soft serves. I do miss the Tokyo Banana Soft Serve which was removed from rotation as of last year!
