I’ve been striving to expand my horizons of hawker food in Singapore and River South Hoe Nam Prawn Noodles just happened to turn up on my search for a lunch spot during a venture to Potong Pasir. Despite the sweltering weather that afternoon, I couldn’t resist hopping on a quick bus ride to check it out.
A certain striped mascot comes to mind whenever someone mentions “locally-brewed beer”. But did you know that Singapore is also home to other microbreweries? Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse boasts an in-house brewery with 23 different taps to satiate cravings for midday or evening pints in its spacious premises in Telok Ayer.
Sen-ryo has been on my list of places to try for a while now, but it was only recently that I finally got to visit this famed Japanese restaurant at ION Orchard. Not for my busy schedule or procrastination, but for a waiting list that averages up to two months.
The Tochigi-based brand has been around since 1999, with a whopping 13 outlets scattered across Hong Kong, where its rise to fame in the region started. Its ION Orchard outpost is its first in Singapore, with queues showing no sign of abating in spite of it having passed its one year mark.
Horne Road is once again, cementing its hipster neighbourhood status with the addition of new coffee joints and quaint cafes. One of these newcomers is Ai Cafe, a cafe by day, bistro by night that has made a name for itself with its quirky desserts.
If you’re a steak lover, chances are you have heard of SKIRT, an elegant steakhouse situated at W Sentosa in Sentosa Cove. Dubbed “the boldest grill”, SKIRT prides itself on its extensive range of top-of-the-line cuts from Argentina, Australia, and USA, along with other mouthwatering offerings made with sustainably-sourced ingredients.
Update August 2023: Soba Kappo Reiwa has moved to Kiliney Road.
Following a successful start in Singapore’s heartlands, Japanese-run Reiwa Soba has upgraded to a space of its own, named Soba Kappo Reiwa. Interestingly, the hole-in-the-wall eatery can be found a 2-min walk away from Buddha Tooth and Relic Museum, in the heart of Chinatown.
