Monster Maki @ Maki-San (30 Aug – 13 Sept 2013)

Ever so often, there comes a rivalry that rocks our generation. From the catty fallout between Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, to the relentless tug-of-war with Mac and PC – anything and everything is a potential battleground to see who can come out tops.

And Maki-San is no exception.

Touted as “the mother of all battles”, the Monster Maki menu was launched in conjunction with the cafe’s 1st Anniversary Bash. Boasting a whopping 10 ingredients each, the Gargan (a meat-based sushi roll) and the Tsunamo (its seafood opponent) will be rollin’ for 2 weeks, during which fans get to vote for their favourite Monster based on taste, appearance, or the sheer novelty of it.  

And the prize? A permanent spot on the menu.

[CLOSED] Bakerzin @ Vivocity

Update 20 Jan 2025: Bakerzin has closed.

When it comes to pasta, I’m not one to go big on fancy schmancy restaurants.

Raised on my family’s frugal philosophy, I grew up with the mentality that I shouldn’t have to pay good money for whatever I can nail in my own kitchen… which explains why I still head over to McDonald’s for my Hot Cake fix 😛 (but that’s a story for another day).

So when my friend suggested lunch at Bakerzin in VivoCity, I couldn’t help but feel a little skeptical.

Don’t get me wrong; I was a fan when they first opened their doors in Tampines 1, but since then, their menu has seen so many changes that I hardly know what to expect (pretty much like every girl who’s seen the love of her life morph into a douche over time). That, coupled with a few not-so-pleasant dining experiences, put it waaaay below on my list of to-dine places in the West.

But as they say, everyone deserves a second chance, and restaurants are no exception. So, I thought, why the hell not? 😀

Magnum Pleasure Store @ Clarke Quay Central Fountain (27th July – 25th Aug 2013)

“Surprise me.”

“Huh?” I turned to my friend, confused, as we stood in front of the circular counter in the Magnum Pleasure Store.

“Help me pick the toppings and drizzle at random; I can’t decide.” He explained, gesturing to the kaleidoscope of toppings which beckoned to us from their little containers.

Pub goers to Clarke Quay would have noticed a brown hued container-like structure in place of the Central Fountain that has dazzled many a tourist (and drenched a few foolhardy ones) recently. Bearing the now iconic M monogram of the Magnum brand, it’s none other than the Magnum Pleasure Store, a popup store that has been dishing up delectable creations from the world’s classiest ice cream.

Arriving at its premises one hot Saturday afternoon, we found it packed with ice cream lovers, curious foodies, and simmering Singaporeans who, like us, were seeking a delicious way to escape the relentless heat. And what better way to do so, then to pop by this lil box of sweet surprises? 😀

Lola’s Cafe @ Kovan

Tucked away in a discreet corner off the beaten track from Kovan MRT Station, Lola’s Cafe appears little more than one of those run-of-the-mill coffee-and-cake joints that have been springing up all over Singapore as of late. Its nondescript exterior bears a simple sign embellished with its name, and from afar, gave me the impression of housing a dusty bookstore that had been left behind in this ever-speedy age of technology.

But looks can be deceiving. 😉

Walking past the glass doors that separated Lola’s interior from the hustle and bustle of its neighbouring housing estates, I found myself immersed in what can only be described as a perfect blend of coziness and that hard-to-find promise of good things to come. I was there to meet up with an old friend from primary school, and what better place to catch up than in this welcoming abode of Lola’s? 😉

[CLOSED] JPOT @ Tampines 1

Update June 2020: JPOT has closed.

The first thing we noticed when my dad and I stepped into JPOT’s branch in Tampines 1 was its looooong Condiments Bar where we could mix and match our condiments in every combination imaginable, including chili padi, spring onions, chopped garlic, peanut sauce, sesame oil, soya sauce, chili oil and more. 

Peanut sauce and sesame oil topped with spring onions? Or chilli padi drenched in soya sauce and chopped garlic? Hey, no one’s stopping you!

[CLOSED] Din Gi Noodle House @ Plaza Singapura

Update June 2020: Din Gi Noodle House has closed.

It was a slightly rainy Sunday when a couple of my mates and I popped by Plaza Singapura looking for a bite to eat, having frolicked the entire day at Marina Barrage for our graduation photo shoot. We decided to check out Din Gi Noodle House, home of the much loved and talked about 一根面 yi gen mian  or single strand noodle.

Tucked away in a corner of Basement 2 of Plaza Singapura, Din Gi Noodle House looked nondescript and we would have completely missed it if not for a couple of chefs hard at work, making their signature single strand noodle with nothing but a pile of dough and years of dedication and practice.

New Menu Launch @ Domino’s Pizza (OMY Blog Club)

Pizza toppings are very much like a girl’s accessories – put too little on, and you’ll fail to stand out from the crowd. Put too much, and you’ll come off looking like a Christmas tree gone wrong; trying to come up with the perfect pizza topping is, as you’d guess, is no mean feat.

So I was pretty impressed to hear that Domino’s Pizza had rolled out not one, not two, but a whopping eight new pizza toppings on top of their already extensive menu. And thanks to the OMY Blog Clubyours truly got an invite to try them out! C:
