Ever so often, there comes a rivalry that rocks our generation. From the catty fallout between Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, to the relentless tug-of-war with Mac and PC – anything and everything is a potential battleground to see who can come out tops.
And Maki-San is no exception.
Touted as “the mother of all battles”, the Monster Maki menu was launched in conjunction with the cafe’s 1st Anniversary Bash. Boasting a whopping 10 ingredients each, the Gargan (a meat-based sushi roll) and the Tsunamo (its seafood opponent) will be rollin’ for 2 weeks, during which fans get to vote for their favourite Monster based on taste, appearance, or the sheer novelty of it.
And the prize? A permanent spot on the menu.
Dubbed “The Monster of the Deep”, the Tsunamo is a seafood roll that will have your taste buds diving into the deep blue with utter glee. Just reading the list of ingredients on the menu had me drooling in anticipation of a tidal wave of flavours!
With Unagi, Steamed Ebi, Bonito Flakes, Seaweed Flakes, Salmon Sashimi, Crab Stick, Tobiko and Wasabi Mayo all wrapped up in a deliciously gooey roll of white rice and seaweed, what more can a seafood lover ask for? 😀
One bite was more than enough to convince me that this is a clear winner; fresh and plentiful, the Tsunamo’s essentials blend very well together. Extra points for those oh so vibrant red and orange hues that just scream, “Eat me!” 😀
With the Tsunamo whipping up a storm in my taste buds, I was eager to see what its meaty rival, the Garguan had in store. Packed to the brim with Roast Beef, Boiled Egg, Teriyaki Chicken, Chicken Floss, Turkey Bacon Bits, Smoked Duck, Shredded Chicken and Smoked Cheese Sauce, this all-meat sushi roll sure is out to stretch your tummy!
Unfortunately, it didn’t quite pack that punch I was looking for. The meat was rather chunky, and, paired with the boiled egg, was a tad tough to chew on. In fact, the pieces broke apart quite a few times and I ended up picking off the ingredients one by one. No complaints about the sauce, though! 😀
For me, the Tsunamo wins hands down (though it’s a close fight between the two, judging from Maki-San’s stats!). It’ll be really interesting to see what happens if Maki-San were to roll out a veggie contender midway through this battle of flavours. 😀
