Bak chor mee is one of those quintessentially Singaporean things that is hard not to love, yet is not easy to nail either. Thankfully for our local food heritage, new contenders like Minced Pork Bros are rising to the challenge of preserving one of our favourite supper dishes, albeit with a few modern twists.

Opened by the owners of hawker legend Roast Paradise, also located at Old Airport Road Food Centre, Minced Pork Bros is a mod-concept stall. Its “young generation” founders, Randall Gan and Kai Koh, have previously collaborated with media personalities such as Class 95FM and The Muttons.
With inflation and uncertainties abound, it’s comforting to know that some things remain constant. Like the unbelievably affordable food at A9 Noodle Dumpling in Fortune Centre!

Whether you’re a French pastry purist or one for whacky fillings and flavours, you can’t deny that Brotherbird Bakehouse has become one of Singapore’s leading institutions on the croissant. And if the long queues and soldout notices are anything to go by, it seems many share this sentiment.
Good news if you’re residing in the east – Brotherbird Bakehouse is running an extended popup at Shell Station MAC Drive-Thru till 31 August, where you can get your hands on their goodies including the sought-after August Edition box!

Update 19 Jan 2025: Nobei Izakaya has closed.
George Town Tze Char & Craft Beer has expanded into Japanese cuisine with the opening of its sister bar, Nonbei Izakaya on South Bridge Road. Inspired by Tokyo’s Drunkards Alley, this part-indoor, part-alfresco bar features tantalising bar bites with an assortment of Japanese sake and beer in a cozy setting.

When in JB, eat cheap (and good) food. During a recent trip across the Causeway, a friend of mine introduced me to Kedai Makan Sing Kee at Jalan Chengai, a homely restaurant situated a short Grab ride from KSL City Mall. After a brief afternoon of mall-hopping, it seemed like an ideal place for a pit-stop to fuel up and rest our feet.

It’s a pretty non-descript place, but also on the clean side. It was also noticeably empty on both nights we visited. Still, if you’re looking for a food spot that can accommodate larger groups, Kedai Makan Sing Kee is a decent option.
The menu is also pretty straightforward, with typical dishes you would expect to find at eateries like it.
Do you believe in second chances? Former air stewardess and founder of Whisking Bakes, Chanel, certainly made good use of hers when she struck out on her own after the pandemic claimed her job. The home-based business has grown tremendously since its inception in May 2020, even moving into a permanent space on Crawford Lane to sell the world’s first orh nee tart balls, among other taro-themed baked goods.
