Singapore’s cafe scene is alive and bustling, with new joints and eateries popping up every month. September Coffee coincidentally opened its doors in the month of September and has already managed to garner throngs of customers at its premises along Southbridge Road in Chinatown.
Named for its owner’s birth month, September Coffee draws inspiration for its menu and decor from cafes in Thailand and South Korea, where the scene is notably more mature. The neutral tones of the furniture, coupled with lush indoor plants, set up the space as a calming retreat from the outside world. That is, if you can beat the relentless crowd.
The all-day menu focuses on fusion dishes that are as delicious as they are aesthetically pleasing. One category that is rather unique to September Coffee is its specialty udon. The Masago Udon ($23+) serves up soft, chewy udon that is made extra decadent by thick, creamy masago sauce with cured ikura and black pepper to enhance the dish’s richness.
The texture of the udon is what makes this dish stand out from similar Western Japanese fusion pastas, and the thick strands hold the cream pretty well. Not hard to see why this is one of the cafe’s signature dishes.

You can also quench your thirst with a number of beautifully-crafted beverages, such as the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte ($8+). This earthy-tasting drink is made zesty by strawberry coulis layered at the bottom of the cup. Soy and oat milk options are also available with a top-up.

Last but not least, there is a number of plated desserts and cakes, such as Tiramisu which is served in limited quantities. I tried the Chocolate Crunch ($9+) and it’s every bit as decadent as you would expect!

September Coffee has made a strong showing with its initial offerings if you’re prepared to wait out the relentless crowd. Its fusion dishes are both unique and refreshing amidst other places churning out cookie-cutter dishes. I imagine this would also be a great spot to snap an OOTD picture or two on slower days!
