The PayLah! Hawker Trail @ Alexandra Village Food Centre (Invite)

Don’t you just hate fumbling around your wallet for cash, or worse, getting to the front of a long queue for your favourite dish, only to find yourself devoid of it?

Thanks to DBS PayLah!, these things are soon to be history. What’s more, you can even embark on your own Hawker Trail, comprising of stalls that now accept payment using this mobile app.

Alexandra Village Food Centre

While majority of the stalls are located in the CBD area and some polytechnics and universities, the others are scattered around various heartland hawker centres in Singapore. And so, my hawker trail took me to Alexandra Village Food Centre.

[MOVED] The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough @ Serene Centre – Homemade Artisanal Loaves; Pizza Night on Sundays

Update June 2020: The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough has moved to Upper Thomson.

I used to have an intense disliking for bread, especially during my kindergarten days. Break time? Soggy white bread slapped around clumpy strawberry jam. Lunch? More flimsy slices of white bread soaked through from being packed with tuna for too long. I vowed to stay away from the treacherous white slices (yes, I know I’m spoilt) until my cafe hopping ventures introduced me to the world of sourdough – robust, crisp, and easily paired with my favourite brunch toppings aka scrambled eggs and bacon.

So when my fellow foodie brought up The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough, a sourdough specialty outlet, I was undeniably enthused.

Morganfield’s @ The Star Vista – The Home of Sticky Bones; Leave Your Diet at the Door (Invite)

“You’ll be trying a lot of food today,” the Morganfield’s PR representative told us as the third dish hit the table.

Morganfield’s is known for hearty American food – think Southern style BBQ, craft beers, and sinfully rich desserts  that will send your calorie counter off the charts (not that you should be counting your calories when you’re dining at the self proclaimed Home of the Sticky Bones anyway).

With their new menu launching next month, we were invited for a taste test of their upcoming dishes and signatures at their outlet at The Star Vista.

[CLOSED] The Bakehouse @ Alexandra Central – The Savoury Arm of Carpenter & Cook

Update June 2020: The Bakehouse has closed.

We Singaporeans sure are spoilt for choices when it comes to food. I remember back in 2009 when I was working in Alexandra, dining options were limited to IKEA, Anchorpoint and Queensway.

Fast forward to today, and we now have Alexandra Central, home to a range of Asian comfort food and Western brunch places – one of them being The Bakehouse by Carpenter & Cook.

[CLOSED] Rollie Olie @ Star Vista – Fusion Food in Pretty Packages

Update 20 Jan 2025: Rollie Olie has closed.

The last time I heard the name Rollie Olie (or rather, Rolie Polie Olie), it was on one of those kids TV channels way back. Now, it seems that an Asian fusion eatery has surfaced at Star Vista.

Well I’m a fan of sushi and all their sushi rolls feature my favourite avocado, so I’m not complaining!  😀

It’s no secret that with the explosion of social media, we eat with our eyes before our mouths, and Rollie Olie has got their presentation done right to a T. Even the box that their sushi rolls come in resembles the American takeaway box, in line with the fusion characteristic of the menu.

C-Side Sentosa @ Siloso Beach Walk (Sugar Rush)

If there’s one thing we can thank Singapore’s weather for, it’s the tropical cheeriness that lasts all year long. And at C-Side Sentosa, summer never ends!

Comprised of five F&B and beach bar outlets, C-Side served as the venue for our second SUGAR RUSH, as well as a new quarterly event called 3BS (more on that later). Having passed the area frequently during my university’s beach orientation games, I jumped at the chance to try their range of bar bites, cocktails and beers.

[CLOSED] PARK @ Holland Village (Sugar)

Update 20 Jan 2025: PARK has closed.

Every now and then, I like to hop off the train on the way home just to see what new places there are that I haven’t tried yet. Hey, what’s a little de-tour to let off some steam from a hectic day at the office, aye? 😉

PARK at Holland Village is one of those cafe cum bistros that I’ve been putting off visiting, till a sudden change of plans left me free (and aimless) at dinnertime. Its prime location just a stone’s throw away from Holland Village MRT station, coupled with its relative seclusion from the busier parts of the neighbourhood, meant precious me-time to unwind and eat. Plus, there’re all those rave reviews about their truffle fries and mac & cheese so why not!
