Update June 2020: The Bakehouse has closed.
We Singaporeans sure are spoilt for choices when it comes to food. I remember back in 2009 when I was working in Alexandra, dining options were limited to IKEA, Anchorpoint and Queensway.
Fast forward to today, and we now have Alexandra Central, home to a range of Asian comfort food and Western brunch places – one of them being The Bakehouse by Carpenter & Cook.
Easties may find The Bakehouse somewhat similar to Percolate, with its small menu of baked goods served mostly on nostalgic enamel plates. Space is rather limited, and the cafe fills up quickly come lunchtime, so come early if you want to dine indoors.
For those working in Alexandra, The Bakehouse offers an Executive Lunch that gets you a pizza or pasta with soup or salad for $14 – that’s a pretty sweet deal considering the pastas are priced at $16.
The Pulled Pork Sandwich is one of the mains that are making their rounds on Instagram, and it’s not hard to see why. The pork is flavourful and tender, and the pear compote adds an interesting tang to the flavour profile. But the real winner for me were ’em buns – so light and fluffy you could just take an afternoon siesta on it.
There’s even some greens to balance out all the pork. Could do with some more pear compote, though.
Carpenter & Cook is known for their baked sweets, and at The Bakehouse, the Passionfruit Meringue Tart is their bestseller. Loved the contrast between sweet and sour; my only complaint was that the filling was a tad watery.
The Bakehouse is an ideal place if you need somewhere cozy to escape for the afternoon. Be sure to check out their picture worthy tiles near the entrance!

Friday, Saturday and eve of PH: 8am – 11pm
Directions: Alight at Redhill MRT Station (EW 18). Take Exit A and cross the road to the bus stop. Board Bus 33 or 120 and alight at IKEA. Walk past IKEA and you will reach Alexandra Central. The Bakehouse is visible from outside.
