With Lunar New Year literally around the corner, customers are flocking to their favourite bakkwa shops to get their festive fix of sweet, barbecued pork. But who says you have to queue under the sweltering hot weather?
Homegrown bakkwa chain Bee Cheng Hiang has turned its flagship store on Serangoon Road into Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery, a two-in-one retail meets bistro concept that brings the joys of purchasing your favourite Chinese snacks and enjoying a meal in a comfortable environment under one roof.
Visitors entering the store are greeted by the sight of a horseshoe shaped counter bearing numerous grades and cuts of bakkwa ranging from original to gourmet fusion. You can even watch them being prepared at the live grilling station, where cooks work round the clock to grill up batches of one of Singapore’s favourite bakkwa. If you thought your seaside barbecue gatherings wee tough, try filling in for the pros at Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery.
The Gourmet Fusion Bakkwa ($4 per slice) is branded as a “best of both worlds” flavour, which combines a unique blend of premium pork hind and pork belly that is succulent and chewy, but also yields hints of smokiness and crispiness. Hand woven and manually barbecued, the Gourmet Fushion Bakkwa is au nataurel – no added MSG, preservatives, meat tenderiser, or artificial colouring and flavouring.
Aside from its signature bakkwa, Bee Cheng Hiang also boasts a variety of house made snacks, including fish skin and coconut munchies – all of them available in individual packaging for your convenience.
What makes Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery stand out from the other outlets are the wine cellar and bistro, which have been tastefully decorated to resemble a posh dining room in an upscale restaurant. To truly elevate the bakkwa experience, Bee Cheng Hiang’s food team has drawn up a Bakkwa and Wine Degustation Set ($11.90 – $28.90) featuring wines from France.
Diner who have grown up snacking on bakkwa may remember savouring homemade creations (bakkwa sandwich, anyone?). Here at Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery, you can enjoy artfully designed tapas, salads, and even pastas featuring this sweet meat. The exquisite Truffle Bakkwa Tart ($4.50 per piece) is one such creation that was designed during the Foodie Makeover series on Toggle, and was eventually added to the menu upon request from viewers.
The tart is carefully layered with ingredients like minced truffle mushrooms and house mayonnaise, giving the dish a mix of sweet and savoury flavours, along with an addictive aroma that makes you just want to grab it and eat it whole.
And as part of the Lunar New Year festivities, Bee Cheng Hiang has also released its own rendition of the traditional yusheng, the Bakkwa Lo Hei ($18.80) which swaps out traditional salmon sashimi for gourmet fusion bakkwa and fried enoki mushrooms for added crunchiness.
Available from now till 19 February, the Bakkwa Lo Hei is just one of the many creations that blend substance and style, and is exclusive to Bee Cheng Hiang Grillery. Would love to try their other dishes some time!
