Mention the word “katsu”, and the first thing that comes to mind are the delectable, deep-fried pork and beef cutlets slapped between two slabs of bread, sold in trios at Japanese convenience stores and takeaway counters.
Little do most non-Japanese know, that “katsu” is also the Japanese word for “victorious”. A fitting name for Esora’s mission, as it navigates these trying times of no dine-in with a limited-time menu of Japanese-style sandwiches!
Available for takeaway and delivery, Esora’s sandos put a luxurious spin on this beloved staple. Flavours include: Japanese Pork, Wagyu Potato Croquette, Tamagoyaki, Ebi Katsu, and Premium Omi or Black Angus Beef.
As a seafood lover, I was curious to see how the Ebi Katsu ($28), a new addition to Esora’s sandos, would fare. The juicy, succulent ebi cutlet is sandwiched between finely shredded cabbage, with a fiery Thai-style sauce that adds a spicy kick. The play on textures makes every bite interesting, with sweet and spicy coming together for a flavour bomb.

The Tamagoyaki ($18) is another classic Japanese flavour that is not to be missed. I love how thick and generous that omelette is! The overtly sweet notes of the tamagoyaki blend well with the shredded cabbage. Pro tip: pop these sandos in a toaster oven for 3 minutes for maximum crisp and flavour.

End your sando indulgence with some sweets courtesy of Esora. The Japanese Pudding ($8) is a custardy treat with intense flavours of egg and caramel. I did find the sweetness a touch too intense for my liking, though.

Esora’s katsu sandos are a great entry point into what this MICHELIN Guide restaurant has to offer. It’ll be available for another week, so pre-order yours before it’s gone!
